Specialized Social Networks for Certain Fields
When you’re scouting out social networking sites for the purpose of showcasing your expertise, make sure you don’t forget to search for some web 2.0 neighborhoods that specialize in your niche.
Here’s a good example: Care2.com. This social networking site has a focus of green living with human and animal rights. Global goodness, if you will. You’re allowed to come onto the social networking site and create a profile.
You can join groups and engage your audience. But this is only suitable if green living or animal and human rights is a part of your demographic. What if it isn’t? Then where can you go to interact with prospects and consumers who would be interested in your products and services?
Go to Google and type in your niche topic plus the words social networking site. When I type in weight loss social networking site, for example, I see news about SparkPeople.com, which is a social networking site for dieters.
These sites might have a smaller audience, but it’s more targeted. You’ll have a greater chance of success at converting your viral marketing efforts on these sites than you would spreading it to an audience who may hold zero interest in what you have to say.
LinkedIn, for example, helps you reach out to career professionals who want to network their way to greater success. This is a social networking site designed for this very purpose. More people are now turning to specialized web 2.0 societies rather than join mass communities like MySpace where you’ll run into people from every walk of life.
