Since the release of my book, Klout Score: Social Media Influence, I’ve often been asked by authors, “Will Klout help me sell more books”?
And my answer is Yes and No.
Yes – knowing how to utilize Klout will help you sell more books by increasing your reach with high influencers in your industry.

Think about it – if you create a relationship with someone online who has 30,000 Twitter followers and 10,000 Facebook fans (not to mention Google+ followers and YouTube subscribers) – and it’s time to launch your book, do you think that person has more influence to spread the word than someone who either isn’t social media savvy or participates at a low level?  But it’s not just the numbers of fans and followers; and, that’s where Klout comes in.  Klout measures how active that person is, as well as, how people respond.
It’s the relationship that matters. So No – Klout in and of itself doesn’t help –  it’s knowing how to use Klout to identify and build relationships with people who will want to help you when it comes time to launch a product, tweet a blog post, pin an image; and, who have a network of people who are equally as responsive. It doesn’t matter who has the most numbers. It’s who has the attention of people that pay attention to what they say.
That’s what Klout shows you – who those people are; and, how you are doing. I’m sure you have Google Analtyics or some traffic measurement system on your website. (If you don’t, you should.) Klout is similar only measuring your social media networking. Is it perfect? Heck, no. Does is help to build a healthy network of relationships? YES!

Social Media Rocks!

Never before has it been easier to find and connect with highly influential people in your industry or niche.  Think about it – if you wanted to reach out to a celebrity and picked up the phone to do so, what are the chances you would get through the gatekeepers?  However, with social media – you can reach out to anyone you want and even make contact with people by surprise sometimes.  Awhile back, I saw an inspirational tweet by Mariel Hemingway that I really liked – look what happened:

This didn’t happen as a result of Klout, but by using Klout and identifying who you want to network with, then Retweet, Favorite, have a conversation with that person, you’ll find there are no barriers.
Here’s an Infographic I had created on Klout – I’d love for you to use the power of social media and SHARE!
